Monogram Etiquette

monogram: mon-uh-gram, noun, a sign of identity usually formed of the combined initials of a name.

That's the official word from Webster. But did you know that monograms were actually created hundreds of years ago as a way for royals to authorize documents and proclamations? In fact, the famous Charlemagne himself, was unable to write his own name so he drew his monogram instead. So, today, in honor of all things monogrammed...here are a few tips on Monogramming etiquette!

According to Crane's Blue Book of Stationery: Tiffany edition, the proper initials for a single individual is first name initial, larger last name initial, and middle initial, (in that order). So, on the gorgeous sterling silver ring above...Terry Danielle Craft's monogram would look like that.

The correct initials for married women to use are those which represent her first name, maiden name, and married last name. If all of the initials are the same size, then they appear in that order. However, if you are choosing a monogram style where the center initial is larger, then the initial order should be first name, larger married last name initial, and maiden initial. Therefore, on the insulated tumbler above (which is super cute, we might add!) Heidi Rudiger LoCicero's monogram would look like that.

When you are using a monogram to incorporate both a husband and wife's initials, the correct order is woman's first name initials, the joint married last name initial (larger), then man's first name initial. The woman's initial always goes first.

The Joy of Learning

Over twenty years ago I remember getting the revelation from a book I read that if a person lives to LEARN, then they will learn to LIVE. Ever since that day I decided to be a student of life and its lessons. I have come to understand that one can learn something every day IF one pays attention. Last week I had the opportunity to attend a world class conference with some of the best communicators around the world. I paid lots of attention, listening intently and took some great notes.

Here are a just a few of the ideas and concepts I learned about. Not all of them were new but all FRESH. As I share them with you, I want to challenge you to think about your perspective on these thoughts:

1. Stay small in your own eyes. Always remember that confidence helps you get to the top but humility keeps you there. Don't despise your small beginnings where you are now. Don't compare your life, position or situation to anyone else. One of the speakers said, “Comparison is acid to your soul.” Ouch! If you compare your situation to others, you will only waste your time instead of focusing on your own journey. Stay focused and faithful on your current assignment and in time your reward or promotion will arrive.

2. Extraordinary things happen when ordinary people not only go the EXTRA mile, but also pray. In other words, never whine, complain or make excuses. Always do your BEST and God will take care of the REST! Never underestimate what GOD can do through you. Don't neglect the spiritual power of life.

3. The distance between where we are and our dream coming to pass is PAIN. Most people try and avoid pain but the fact is that if you plan to achieve and accomplish things in life, you cannot avoid it. Don't be naive about pain, adversity and obstacles as you continue to pursue your dream. Pain is not prejudice and visits all of us. The positive thing about pain is that it is a good teacher. Hopefully, we extract the lessons and get stronger with age. Remember, “The difference between where we are now and where we want to be is the pain we are unwilling to endure.”

4. Always live your life with the end in mind - because the end will come. Wow! This is so true. Program your thinking, your relationships, your finances and your life for long-term. Dr. Covey says, "Begin with the end in mind." Too many people think this is just about projects in business or goals in sports but the truth is it is about LIFE. How do you want to be remembered? What is the legacy you are leaving behind every day with people you meet? What type of heritage are you leaving your children?

As I listened for over two days to some great thoughts, I was reminded that none of us should wish for an easy life, but we should work to become better. We shouldn't wish to have no problems, but we should focus on having more skills. Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere!

What a pleasant surprise! Our precious, personalized Easter Baskets were recently featured on one of the South's best photographer's website and her FACEBOOK page, Willoughby Studios.

"Hop on over" to her website to check out the beautiful photography. Rebecca Willoughby (the former Miss Bankston and an AOII sorority sis) is a well known photog in South Louisiana. Her work captures the sweet moments in life for families, businesses or babies.

Her creative style is what I like best. Rebecca will do traditional "posed" shots for clients, but I prefer her candid snaps of kids just being kids, families just playing together naturally on location, or business folks captured entrenched in their jobs. The color in her photographs is rich and inviting. Her angles are enviable.

Pottinger Photography recently featured a few stunning snapshots from one of their recent weddings. To say that we are in love with their photography and the bride and the monogrammed locket is an understatement!

Wow what an emotional experience to hear this song!}

Seasons, like friendships are all about growth and change. Nothing lasts forever. Not bad times. Not good times. Not even seasons. Talk about "PAW-recious!" Truly...love at first bite! Today is the Krewe of Arfeous's Pooch Parade in Sandestin's Village of Baytowne Wharf. Yours truly will serve as the Emcee of the event. You should totally join us for a "howl-ing" good time!

Susan and Chris McGary of Bark Avenue in the Village host the event each year. Cute canines, precious pups and silly dog owners of every breed will parade down the cobblestone streets to chants of "throw me something mister!" Many of the shops, such as Bark Avenue, Frill Seekers Gifts and Tales by the Sea will be doing specials throughout the day. All shops will be pet-friendly this week.

The revelry begins at 2pm sharp, so plan on getting here early. Celebrity judges will watch the parade from a reviewing stand, while the Bay City Brass Band will fill the air with traditional Mardi Gras tunes.

It is a sight to see! Last year my favorite entry was an adorable pug who was costumed as Star Trek's Yoda and was parading atop a golf cart turned space ship.

Recently a customer came into the shop looking for a fun, interactive party to host for her Bunco group. After browsing through several paper lines for inspiration, the Frill Seekers team had the perfect suggestion.

Mrs. A had indicated her Bunco buddies were busy moms. She said most stay swamped from sun up to sun down. So, the Frill Seekers team suggested a relaxing Spa-ahhhhh party.

We used this fun invitation for inspiration. The card is actually cut out in the shape of a nail polish bottle. The polka dot ribbon in hot pink it added at the middle. The cards are packed in boxes of 10. Printing is just $12.00!

With the new year upon us...it's time to reflect on treasured old traditions and prepare for new ones. The Holidays are such a special time for our family, we'd love to share a few favorite parts of the season with you!

FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITION: Decorating the Christmas tree as a family. As each ornament is carefully unwrapped the story of its origin is told. Between stories, my daughter, Peyton and I make yummy holiday cookies to share with friends.

FAVORITE CHARITY: Vera Bradley Breast Cancer Foundation. Following the death of my beloved mother-in-law last spring, our staff and family decided to host an annual event benefiting the foundation. This will be a tradition for us each fall. {{You should join us!}}

SIGNATURE GIFT: Obviously a gift that is monogrammed! {{Duh!}} My favorites are the insulated picnic coolers and personalized cups.

After 20 years of {mostly} blissful marriage, I am often asked what the secret is. The secret is---there is no secret...marriage is alot of hard work. It's that simple. What looks easy, is really a lot of hard work.

When you visit our home, you'll notice these rules posted on my refrigerator and on my beside table. I guess you could call these "my tips for keeping it all together for so long." I've had them since the first year Mr. B and I were married. I'd love to know who first figured these out. That person for sure...knew the secret. ENJOY!

RULES FOR A HAPPY MARRIAGE

1. Never both be angry at the same time. {hard, but worth it}

2. Never yell at each other unless the house is on fire. {my kids love this}

3. If one of you has to win the argument, let it be your mate.

4. If you have to criticize, do it lovingly. {or not at all}

5. Never bring up mistakes from the past.

6. Neglect the whole world rather than each other.

7. Never go to sleep with an argument unsettled. {whew...you may not sleep for days}

8. At least once every day try to say one kind or complimentary thing to your life's partner.

9. When you have done something wrong, be ready to admit it and ask for forgiveness.

10. It takes two to make a quarrel, and the one in the wrong is the one who does the most talking. {or is the most defensive!}

Wish...I just love that word! If I could make 3 gift wishes for Christmas...this is what you'd see under my Christmas tree:

My last wish would consist of these fabulous engraved acrylic pieces. I would use the tray on my bed to hold the remote control and a magazine. The ice bucket would be perfect on my bedside table. The engraved wine glasses are so beautiful---I'd likely order a set of 8 !

Silly Bandz...the rubber band craze at Frill Seekers

So...it's Saturday night and I am just S*I*L*L*Y! Why you might ask? Let's just call it one of those "Why didn't I think of that moments?"

Unless you've been hiding under a rock somewhere or in a foreign country...you've likely spotted these festive little silly shaped rubber bands on some kid's wrist. Meet SILLY BANDZ. Kids want them...Frill Seekers Gifts has them!

The rubber bands are in the shape of creatures, animals or fun shapes when not on the wrist. Really kinda cute, I must admit. Kids, teenagers and even adults are collecting them~trading them~wearing them!

We love making unique gifts "fore" celebrities. In this case, the gift fits the new mommy, a pro golfer, to a "tee!" This beautiful pillow will look adorable in the new baby's nursery! The pillow is a linen flak seed color with a yummy bubblegum monogram. It is finished off with a sheer baby pink ribbon. Heidi LoCicero, co-owner of Frill Seekers Gifts in the Village of Baytowne Wharf, is channeling grief into productivity by throwing a Tinkled Pink Party at Graffiti’s in Sandestin on Thursday.

LoCicero lost her mother-in-law to breast cancer about five months ago. Her daughter Peyton, 16, who is a member of the Fort Walton Beach High School Stars dance team, also recently lost her coach, Charlotte Dry, to the disease.

“In the process of grieving and trying to figure out why bad things happen, we realized that we could channel that sadness into building a really great event,” LoCicero said. “It has been a hard year for the family, but we just explained to the children that we can make a difference.”

The mother-daughter team have been working together, in association with the Vera Bradley Breast Cancer Foundation, to plan the event. According to LoCicero, she had expected the preparations to take longer, but the response from the community was so great that it came together in just a few months.

Graffiti’s offered to provide a location for the party and lunch for the ladies. And several local businesses, including Aloha Surf Company, The Village Boutique, M Cline Jewelry, CoCo & Co., Mermaids Boutique, Tales by the Sea and Bark Avenue, have donated items for the fashion show and silent auction.

“The local community immediately got behind it,” LoCicero said. “It has really been heartwarming to see that even in bad times people still want to do something good.”
The event will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 8 and will celebrate survivors of breast cancer and honor the memory of the women who have died from the disease. LoCicero said the event is an opportunity for ladies from the community to get together and relax while raising money for the Vera Bradley Breast Cancer Foundation.

For tickets, which are $20 and include lunch, door prize entry and the fashion show, contact Frill Seekers Gifts at (850) 267-4438. Attendees are encouraged to don their favorite hats and wear something pink.

“Come for two hours and spend some time with your girlfriends,” LoCicero said. “It’s going to be a fun, casual event that will have a big impact.”

Next Thursday, October 8th at 11:30 a.m., Emerald Coast ladies will have just opportunity to shop, dine and relax at a festive party with a purpose: The Frill Seekers Gifts/Vera Bradley Breast Cancer Foundation Tickled Pink Party/Luncheon and Fashion Show. Taking place at Graffiti's Restaurant at Sandestin's Baytowne Wharf, this event will celebrate Breast Cancer Survivors and honor the memory of those who lost the battle with a pink themed luncheon complete with pink lemonade and pink ice tea and topped off with pink cupcakes and strawberry pink ice cream!

A stunning fashion show will feature fall and winter clothing collections from CoCo and Company, Tales by the Sea, Mermaids Boutique, The Village Boutique and howling cute doggie fashions from Bark Avenue. A sneak peek at Vera Bradley's winter 2009 collection of handbags, stationery, and travel accessories will be featured from Frill Seekers Gifts in Baytowne Wharf.

The Tickled Pink Party will also feature a silent auction of incredible pink gifts, and a presentation by the Vera Bradley Foundation's national ambassador, Heidi Floyd, who is flying into Destin for the event. As a special treat, the first 50 guests to RSVP, will receive a Vera Bradley limited edition gift.

Event founder, Destin resident, Heidi LoCicero and her 16 year old daughter Peyton, created the event to honor Peyton's grandmother, Inez Addison LoCicero, who lost her battle with breast cancer just months ago. "Peyton and I were struggling with grief and felt that we should find a way to not only honor my mother in law's memory, but to raise funds---in a fun way---to help find a cure," said Heidi LoCicero. "This was the perfect way to include the entire community and raise awareness," explained Peyton LoCicero.

Peyton, who is a member of the Fort Walton Beach High School Stars Dance team, also recently experienced the loss of the Stars long time coach, Mrs. Charlotte Dry, to the disease. "My team and I miss Mrs. Dry every day and know that by supporting events like this one...that we can save lives," said Peyton. A special Hope Grows Memory Wall at the event will feature Mrs. Dry's photo and event guests are invited to bring photos of their loved ones who have been or are affected by Breast Cancer!

"There's no better place to celebrate life and bond with your BFF's than at a fabulous event, doing fabulous things," LoCicero said. Tickets for the Luncheon are $20.00 which includes a door prize entry, lunch and the style show. Reservations are required.
